LARCs

Mabel Wadsworth Center is partnering with Direct Relief to provide free Liletta hormonal IUD devices to clients without insurance! The only cost to the client is the insertion fee. These free devices are part of an effort to expand access to birth control to vulnerable populations across the United States because we all deserve to have a say in our bodily autonomy.

Call Mabel’s at (207) 947-5337 to learn more about these devices and to see if you qualify.

Learn about LARCs:

Long-acting reversible contraceptives are highly effective nonpermanent birth control methods that do not require daily, weekly, or monthly attention. They are inserted by a medical provider and last for anywhere from 3 to 10 years.  The method can be removed at any time and fertility will quickly return. Call and make your appointment today to determine if a LARC is the right birth control method for you!

Hormonal IUDs (Intrauterine Devices) Mirena, Skyla & Liletta
The Mirena, Skyla and Liletta IUDs are more than 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.  They are small, plastic devices with a string attached and shaped like a T. The IUD releases the synthetic hormone progestin and causes changes in the uterus, cervix and fallopian tubes to prevent pregnancy. It is inserted through the cervix and into the uterus by a health care provider. The Mirena IUD can last for seven years, the Skyla can last up to three years, and the Liletta can last up to four years but all three can be taken out at any time by a provider. The hormonal IUDs do not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Paragard IUD (Intrauterine Device)
The Paragard IUD is more than 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. It is a small plastic device with a string attached, shaped like a T, with a tiny copper wire wrapped around the stem. The Paragard is non-hormonal and causes changes in the uterus, cervix, and fallopian tubes to prevent pregnancy. It is inserted through the cervix and into the uterus by a provider. It can last 12 years but can be taken out at any time by a provider. The Paragard does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Implant (Nexplanon)
Nexplanon is greater than 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. It is a soft, flexible rod about 1 ½ inches long that slowly releases the synthetic hormone progestin. It is inserted by a health care provider under the skin of a woman’s upper inner arm. Nexplanon lasts five years but can be taken out at any time by a health care provider. Nexplanon does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
