From our clients:
"I learned from you that I was the one in control because it was and is my body. You gave me a wonderful gift just by listening and understanding... I just wanted to say thank you."
"Many thanks to all of the wonderful staff at Mabel Wadsworth Women's Health Center... you all reflect the mission statement and values so well in the way you deliver service and care to women. Every opportunity I get, I tell people of the wonderful things you do..." |

Ruth Lockhart (left) and co-founder Sharon Barker
This year, Mabel Wadsworth Center presented its premier achievement award to our co-founder and Executive Director, Ruth L. Lockhart. Many agreed, “it was about time.”
Each year, the Mabel Sine Wadsworth Women’s Health Achievement Award honors an individual in Maine who has demonstrated a remarkable contribution to feminist principles in women’s health care. The award is named for Mabel Sine Wadsworth, a pioneer in women’s health in Maine and a co-founder of the organization that bears her name.
“Remarkable” and “pioneer” also apply to Ruth Lockhart, who has served as the Center’s Executive Director for 17 years and is one of five founders of the organization. She has more than 30 years of experience in education, administration and direct clinical care in sexual and reproductive health. Ruth’s passion for women’s health and reproductive rights is unmatched in Maine, and none better exemplify the mission and purpose of Mabel Wadsworth Women’s Health Center.
Congratulations, Ruth!

a CALL to ACTION
As we look forward to another 25 years of caring and advocating for Maine women, we have been asked repeatedly, “what can I do?” Now is the time for the younger generations to take up the mantle of reproductive rights for all. Now is the time for young women and men to organize to prevent violence of all kinds in our communities. Now is the time to prepare to carry the torch that will, very soon, be passed along to you.
This IS a call to action. We offer five suggestions below, from very simple changes in the language you use to joining others in the movement to protect women’s reproductive choice.
- Be informed. Be accurate. And most of all, be willing to share. (read more...)
- Attend an event Connect, learn and have fun. (read more...)
- Stop saying “I’m pro-choice, BUT…” (read more...)
