  1. I’m a 16-year-old in Maine.  How can I get emergency contraception?
  1. Emergency contraception (EC), sold under the brand name Plan B, is a safe and effective back-up method of birth control. It can help to prevent pregnancy when taken within 120 hours (five days) after unprotected sex. Right now in Maine, women of any age can get EC at most pharmacies. Maine women who are under 17 years old can access EC at a pharmacy (without having to make an appointment with a health care provider) as long as there is pharmacist available who is trained to dispense it to minors (call ahead to make sure). Women who are 17 and older can get EC over the counter, without a prescription; just walk up to the pharmacy and ask for EC. The sooner that you take EC, the more effective it is in preventing pregnancy.  We encourage women to plan ahead and pick up emergency contraception pills to have at home, just in case.  If you want more information or need help finding a participating pharmacy which carries Plan B, you can call Mabel Wadsworth Women’s Health Center at 1-800-948-5337. Or visit www.not-2-late.com for more information and a provider directory in your area.
