Mabel Wadsworth Women’s Health Center is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. Founded in 1984, Mabel Wadsworth Center is the only private, not-for-profit free-standing feminist health center in Maine and one of fewer than 20 in the United States.
The Center began, as the five founders remind us, “from conversations around a kitchen table.” These conversations centered on creating an alternative model for women’s health care delivery and self empowerment, where women are equal members of their own health care team and have a friend in the process, not just a provider. In the early days, Mabel Wadsworth Center was an all-volunteer operation, with professionals donating their skills to provide health services. |

25 years and counting...
In 25 years, the Center has grown to become a comprehensive women’s health center and a leading advocate for women’s health issues in the state and region. Mabel Wadsworth Women’s Health Center is literally on the front lines and at the frontier of women’s health care in Maine and in Washington, DC. If it has to do with women’s reproductive rights or access to abortion in Maine, chances are excellent that the Center initiated it, has taken the lead in it or has been asked to advise on it. Our track record means we have the contacts, and more important, the credibility to make things happen. |

OUR INTENT
To empower all women, regardless of color, sexual orientation or economic status to take control of their sexual and reproductive lives through the menstrual years and beyond.
OUR VISION
Knowledge about our bodies and our sexuality; resources and clinical services offered in an environment of support and concern; a network that acknowledges our common experiences as women; a focal point for our energy in the enhancement and celebration of women’s lives; a feminist organization in Maine for the enrichment of all people.
OUR PHILOSOPY
Mabel Wadsworth Women's Health Center was founded in 1984 in response to political pressures that sought to restrict women’s choices in reproductive and sexual health. Our philosophy is rooted in a three-pronged approach to women’s health care: clinical and educational services combined with advocacy. |
