Pubic Lice/Crabs
What is pubic lice and how is it spread?
Pubic lice (or crabs) can be spread by direct contact with infected pubic hair or by infected objects such as bedding, towels, underwear and swimsuits.
How can I prevent it?
By not having direct contact with infected pubic hair or infected objects, you can protect yourself from an infection.
How can I get tested for it?
Your provider can diagnose pubic lice by doing an exam.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms may include severe itching in the genital area and visible small bugs in the pubic hair.
What is the treatment?
There are special shampoos available at most drugstores. It is also important to wash all clothing and linens in hot water. Shaving the infected area will not get rid of pubic lice; they will actually crawl into the hair follicle and wait for hair to grow back.
What could happen if it is left untreated?
If the infection is not treated, you can get an infection from scratching broken skin.
How common is it?
No one really knows; the rates of pubic lice are not reported by the CDC.
