Mulluscum Contagiosum
General Information Molluscum Contagiosum is a viral skin condition characterized by soft, round papular lesions (raised white bumps). Molluscum is transmitted through direct physical contact, sexual or otherwise, with the lesions. It can also be transmitted by sharing bathing suits, linens, bath water, sex toys, and douching equipment with someone who has the lesions. It can also be spread by scratching already existing lesions and transmitting the virus to another part of the body. The lesions may occur alone or in groups, anywhere on the body. They are commonly found on the pubis, lower abdomen, inner thighs, chest, penis, or vulva. SymptomsThe virus incubation period is anywhere from two weeks to two months after initial exposure. The lesions are usually a pearly white, waxy, pimple-like bump.
Testing Diagnosis can generally be made from the characteristic appearance and, if needed, can be confirmed by a smear from one lesion.
Treatment Since most lesions go away on their own within 6 to 12 months, it is often not necessary to treat them. If you do decide upon a treatment:
