Issues Advocacy: Abstinence-Only Education

Abstinence-only programs are federally funded programs taught in middle schools and high schools across the country.  They promote abstinence from sexual activity but do not teach basic facts about contraception.  The programs often give misinformation about sexual health.

In 2004 the House of Representatives Special Investigations Division found that 80% of abstinence only curricula contained false, misleading, or distorted information about reproductive health including the effectiveness of contraceptives and the risks of abortion.   It found that abstinance-only education blurred religion and science, treated stereotypes about girls and boys as scientific fact and contained scientific errors.
